Former “Kiddy Kapers” Star Passes Away in Malibu Wildfire

Rory Callum Sykes, who starred in the 1998 British TV show “Kiddy Kapers,” died on January 8 when a wildfire swept through his family’s 17-acre property in Malibu, California. His mother, Shelley Sykes, shared on social media that she tried to stop the flames with a hose, but there was no running water. Despite her efforts, she was unable to lift Rory to safety because she had a broken arm.
A Life of Challenges and Triumphs
Rory was born blind with cerebral palsy on July 29, 1992. Through surgeries and therapies, he regained much of his sight and learned to walk. He became known for his motivational speeches, inspiring people to overcome obstacles. Rory even co-founded Happy Charity, which aims to bring “Hope, Happiness & Health to those that are Hurting.”
Global Inspiration
Rory often spoke at events around the world, including gatherings hosted by life coach Tony Robbins. On an Australian TV show in 2003, he told viewers, “It doesn’t matter what happens to you in life; it’s what you do about it that counts.” This positive attitude made him a role model for many.
Family and Community Support
Shelley described her son as “beautiful” and “wonderful” and said she is “totally heart broken” by his death. Born in Britain, Rory also lived in Australia and the United States, sharing his story wherever he went. Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is now helping the family with official procedures.
Rory’s story reminds us that hope and determination can help us achieve great things, even when life is tough. His inspiring words and actions continue to encourage people everywhere to keep going, no matter what challenges they face.
