Dayton Family Dollar Set to Close, Affecting Local Community

Store Closure and Discount Details

The Family Dollar store on North Main Street in Dayton will close later this month, and local residents say the closure will have a big impact on the neighborhood, which already has limited shopping options.

The store, located at 1130 N. Main St. near Helena Street, about a mile north of downtown, will close on November 23. Currently, the store is offering a 20% discount on items, which will increase to 30% next week and 40% during its final week.

Community Reaction

“I think it will be a big loss not just for Riverdale, but also for nearby neighborhoods,” said Victoria McNeal, president of the Riverdale Neighborhood Association.

Many shoppers believe shoplifting is one of the reasons the store is closing. Several customers said the store had a lot of theft, which they think played a role in the decision to close. A store employee also confirmed that shoplifting was a major problem that hurt profits.

Part of a Larger Trend

This Family Dollar store is the second one in northwest Dayton to close this year, which is part of a larger trend of store closures among retail chains that have struggled in recent years.

Shoppers Express Disappointment

Karen Caudill, 55, said she loves shopping at Family Dollar because of the great deals and good selection. On Wednesday afternoon, she bought six pet bandanas for about $1.65. She also mentioned that the North Main Street store was the only place in Dayton where she could find her favorite Tangy Pickle Dorito chips.

Caudill’s daughter, Amanda Sizemore, agreed that Family Dollar had better prices compared to other dollar stores and big retailers like Walmart. Caudill also said her other daughter, who lives near the Family Dollar, often shops there for groceries, baby products, and household items.

“I hate it for my kids and my grandkids because they shop here a lot,” Caudill said.

Challenges and Closure Reasons

Victoria McNeal said she is very disappointed that the store is closing. She noted that although the store had temporary shutdowns before and was remodeled just last year, it still had problems with theft, staffing, and cleanliness. However, she thought there were still enough customers to keep it open.

McNeal also mentioned that a clerk told her the store is closing due to losses from theft. “They were there for a long time,” she said. “They were good for a long time.”

Retail Struggles in Ohio

Family Dollar’s parent company, Dollar Tree, announced earlier this year that it would be closing hundreds of Family Dollar locations. A northwest Dayton store at 440 N. James H. McGee Blvd. was one of those that closed months ago.

Ohio has had over 400 Family Dollar stores, including about 25 locations in Montgomery County. The retail environment has been challenging for many big chains, with Rite Aid also announcing earlier this year that it would close all its Ohio stores.
