FAA Bans U.S. Flights to Haiti for 30 Days

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has stopped U.S. flights to Haiti for 30 days after three planes were hit by gunfire while attempting to land in the country. This was announced in a Notice to Air Mission on Tuesday. The situation has raised serious concerns about the safety of flying into Haitian airspace, prompting these new restrictions.

FAA Restrictions on Flights to Haiti

The FAA stated that “U.S. civil aviation operations in the territory and airspace of Haiti below 10,000 feet” are now banned. This means that no U.S. planes are allowed to fly over Haiti at lower altitudes, including the usual approach and landing paths. This restriction is intended to protect passengers and crew from any similar incidents that may happen in the near future.

Spirit Airlines Flight Incident

The decision was made after a Spirit Airlines flight from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Haiti was hit by gunfire while trying to land at Toussaint Louverture Airport in Port-au-Prince. The Haitian National Office of Civil Aviation (OFNAC) reported that the plane was hit four times, but it was able to divert and land safely in Santiago, Dominican Republic. Fortunately, no passengers were hurt, though a flight attendant sustained minor injuries and was receiving medical attention. This incident has caused significant concern, highlighting the dangerous situation in Haitian airspace.

FlightRadar24 data showed that the plane came as close as 550 feet from the runway before it had to change its landing plan. The FAA confirmed that the Spirit Airlines flight landed safely in the Dominican Republic after reportedly being damaged by gunfire. The plane’s close approach to the runway before being forced to abort its landing underscores how sudden and serious the danger was. The crew had to make a quick decision to change their plans to ensure everyone’s safety.

JetBlue and American Airlines Suspend Flights

On Monday, a JetBlue flight leaving Haiti for New York City was also hit by a bullet. As a result, JetBlue has suspended all flights to and from Haiti until December 2 due to the ongoing civil unrest. The airline has emphasized that it is committed to the safety of its passengers and crew and will not resume flights until it believes the risk has decreased. This suspension is expected to cause disruptions for many travelers, but safety remains the top priority for the airline.

American Airlines reported that one of their planes, Flight 819, was also hit by gunfire while flying in Haitian airspace on Monday. The plane landed safely in Miami, and after inspection, bullet damage was found. Because of this, American Airlines has suspended its daily flights between Miami and Port-au-Prince until February 12. The airline stated that they are working with authorities to monitor the situation and will only resume flights when it is safe. Passengers who had planned to travel on these flights are being contacted by the airline and offered alternative options.

Response from the American Pilots Association

The American Pilots Association confirmed the bullet damage and said they would remain in contact with American Airlines and the FAA regarding the resumption of service to Haiti. The association expressed concern for the safety of flight crews and passengers and supports the suspension of flights until the situation improves. American Airlines reiterated that their main focus is safety and security, and they will continue to monitor the situation closely. They have stated that they are prepared to take further action if necessary and will adjust their operations as needed to ensure that everyone remains safe.

Aviation Community Concerns

The incidents of gunfire affecting multiple flights have caused alarm throughout the aviation community. Airlines are now taking extra precautions when planning routes that pass near or through Haitian airspace. The safety of passengers and crew is always the most important concern, and the FAA’s decision to restrict flights is aimed at preventing any more dangerous situations. The situation in Haiti remains unpredictable, and airlines are urging passengers to stay informed about any changes to their travel plans. Authorities will continue to assess the risks, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
