Tony Todd, Famous ‘Candyman’ Actor, Dies at 69

A Legacy in Horror and Beyond

Tony Todd, the actor best known for his role in the horror movie Candyman, has passed away at the age of 69. He also acted in many other films, such as Final Destination, The Rock, and Platoon. His wife, Fatima, confirmed that he died at his home in Los Angeles on Wednesday after a long illness.

Early Life and Career Highlights

Tony Todd was born in Washington, D.C. in 1954. He had an incredible 40-year career and acted in over 200 movies and TV shows. He first gained attention in the war movie Platoon, where he played Sergeant Warren. Later, he appeared in big movies like The Rock alongside Nicolas Cage and The Crow, where he played a villain named Grange. In the Final Destination series, he was known for his role as the eerie funeral home owner, William Bludworth.

Television Success

Tony also appeared in many popular TV shows. He had guest roles in series like 24, The X-Files, MacGyver, Law & Order, Beverly Hills 90210, Xena: Warrior Princess, and Murder, She Wrote. He was also featured in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine, playing the Klingon Kurn, who was Worf’s brother.

Voice Acting and Video Game Roles

Tony’s deep voice made him a great choice for video games and animated characters as well. He voiced characters in the Call of Duty and Half-Life game series, played Venom in Spider-Man 2, and portrayed the villain in Transformers: Rise of the Fallen.

The Legacy of Candyman

In the 1992 movie Candyman, Tony played the terrifying hook-handed killer, who appears when someone says his name five times in front of a mirror. The movie addressed themes of racism and social inequality. Tony’s character, Daniel Robitaille, was a man who had been lynched and became a vengeful ghost haunting a public housing project. In 2019, Tony told The Guardian that he was paid $1,000 each time he got stung by a bee during filming—and he got stung 23 times. “Everything that’s worth making has to involve some sort of pain,” he said.

Tony reprised his iconic role in the 2021 reboot of Candyman, produced by Jordan Peele, bringing the story to a new generation of viewers.

Giving Back to the Community

Tony was not just an actor; he also used his fame to help others. He worked with gang outreach programs and taught acting to kids who didn’t have many opportunities. Reflecting on Candyman, Tony once said: “I’ve done 200 movies, but this is the one that stays in people’s minds. It affects people of all races. I’ve used it as a way to start conversations in gang-intervention work: What frightens you? What horrible things have you experienced?”

Tributes to a Legend

New Line Cinema, the company that produced the Final Destination movies, paid tribute to Tony on Instagram. They wrote, “The industry has lost a legend. We have lost a cherished friend. Rest in peace, Tony. – Your Final Destination Family.”
