A Record-Breaking Opening Day
The movie version of the musical Wicked is doing exceptionally well at the U.S. box office, surpassing early expectations with a fantastic opening day. Starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, the film has already broken records for musical movies, and it looks like it could be one of the biggest hits of the season, possibly even outperforming Gladiator II. Here are the details.
Competition with Gladiator II
Unlike Wicked, Gladiator II is a completely different type of movie. However, the release of both films is being compared to the “Barbenheimer” event earlier this year, when two major movies came out simultaneously and competed for viewers. So far, Wicked appears to be leading, with stronger opening numbers compared to Gladiator II. While Gladiator II might have picked up momentum over the weekend, more information is needed to confirm its performance.
Record-Breaking Box Office Numbers
Trade analyst Luiz Fernando reported that Wicked made history by having the biggest opening day ever for a musical film, earning $46.7 million on its first Friday. This figure includes $19.2 million from early preview showings earlier in the week. The movie outperformed several popular releases, such as Frozen ($26.8 million), The Little Mermaid ($38.1 million), Wonder Woman ($38.2 million), and even Frozen 2 ($42.5 million).
The report also highlighted that Ariana Grande’s film has already surpassed Into the Woods, which made $31 million in its first three days. With just one day of earnings, Wicked is now expected to have the biggest opening weekend for a musical movie, with projected earnings between $115 and $135 million in the United States alone. Globally, the film could make over $200 million during its debut weekend.
International Success
Directed by Jon M. Chu, Wicked has received positive reviews and is also performing well internationally. In South Korea, it has maintained the number one spot and saw a significant increase of 131.9% in earnings on Saturday. So far, the movie has made about $3.3 million in South Korea and is expected to earn between $4.5 and $6 million by the end of the weekend.
Wicked was released in theaters on November 22.
